|About the Artist
Neil Hopkins was born in Salford, Lancashire, in 1942, and after starting his secondary education at Salford Grammar School, moved in 1954 to Wallasey where he continued at Wallasey Grammar School.
He left in 1958 and commenced his art education in Wallasey School of Art, where he passed the Intermediate Examination in Art and Crafts, and the National Diploma in Design and Pottery Special Level. He next moved to a Joint Course of Manchester School of Art and Manchester University School of Education and completed his training in 1964 with the award of Art Teacher's Diploma and Art Teacher's Certificate.
His first employment was as Resident Designer for the Empire Porcelain Company in Stoke-on-Trent, where he produced succesfull ranges of tableware. In 1966, to widen his design experience he went to ICI to join their 'Vymura' design team and was involved for five years producing designs for their PVC wallcovering. He then transferred from 'Vymura' to ICI Motor Products and became 'Liaison' Stylist working with the designers and stylists in the motor industry developing with them new colours and textures for leathercloth fabrics. In 1976 he decided that he had had enough of the industry and moved to a small holding on a Lleyn Peninsula hillside. In July 1977 he set forth to paint his first watercolour! Since then his work has sold to all corners of the world and as one of North Wales' leading watercolourists, he regularly exhibits throughout Wales and into England. In recent years he has added chalk pastels to his output, and also a range of limited edition prints.
